The Play Station maker was not joking around when it showcased a prototype to the world, which looked to be an Electric Vehicle. This was exactly 2 years ago as CES technology conference, January 2020 in Las Vegas in a major surprise to the world. The prototype, called VISION-S, was a 7 seater SUV with all-wheel-drive equipped with self-driving technology.
Well Sony has not dropped that concept project as they said that it would create a new mobility unit and would enter the already dynamic EV space. This shows how the electronics and car businesses are now overlapping and tech giants are also jumping into an already hot space of EV.
CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said Sony was exploring a “commercial launch” of EVs at a press conference ahead of the CES trade show in Las Vegas this year. But this is not all, the company also unveiled electric SUV the VISION-S 02, their second concept. Sony’s VISION-S prototype electric car, which was showcased in CES 2020, is already being tested for its durability in Austria.
The second EV concept shows the company is really pushing forward within the EV space, but the formation of Sony Mobility is the real statement of intent made by them. “The new company will aim to make the best use of AI and robotics technologies, help realize a world where everyone can live in harmony with robots on a daily basis, fill people with emotion, and contribute to society,” Sony said.
With Tesla already a market leader and companies like Ford, GM already increasing their EV production pertaining to demand, seems like Sony too wants a slice of cake of the EV space.
